Halve Maen

66 persons

The Halve Maen is an impressive and elegant vessel, ideal for medium to large groups of up to 66 guests. Its spacious layout offers excellent comfort for events, dinners, and social gatherings, allowing guests to move freely and relax on board. With refined interiors and wide views of the surroundings, it provides a smooth and memorable cruising experience through Amsterdam’s iconic canals.

The story of a name The Halve Maen is named after the Dutch East India Company yacht with which the English captain Henry Hudson explored the East Coast of North America in 1609, in service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Searching for a passage to Asia, he sailed up the river that would later bear his name — and laid the foundations for what would a few years later be called New Amsterdam; what we know today as New York. A name with meaning: for a vessel that is classic sailing heritage on the outside, and on the inside resembles a New York loft more than a canal cruiser. The history of the boat The Halve Maen was built in Germany in 1936, in all likelihood by the renowned Jean Stauf shipyard in Königswinter. During the Second World War she was confiscated by the Germans and used as target practice. In 1991 she was found half-sunk in the harbour of Maasbracht by Jos Haarhuis, who had been admiring her elegant lines for some time. With help from the local fire brigade — for whom salvaging the boat was a welcome training exercise — she was pumped dry and transported to Jos' back garden. There he restored her almost entirely by himself over twelve years. He later sold the boat to an owner in Hellevoetsluis, where she lay deteriorating in the harbour for years — something Jos, with whom we would later get in touch, watched with regret. We took over the boat in 2020. During the Covid period in 2021 we completely restored the exterior; in 2022 and 2023 the entire interior, including the conversion to 100% electric propulsion. After the restoration we invited Jos to see his old boat again. He thought she looked magnificent. On board On the outside the Halve Maen is classic sailing heritage: a white hull with a wooden superstructure. Inside, a different story awaits — a floating cocktail bar in New York loft style with plenty of steel, wood, glass and copper. The wooden floor appears to float and along the length of the boat the inside of the hull, with its original rivets, is clearly visible and can be lit from below with LED lighting. We have made the original hull visible rather than hiding it away. At the front stands the custom-built bar with beer tap, from which a 50-inch touchscreen can rise at the front for presentations or meetings. There are also two high tables on board with bar stools, sliding hatches in the roof for fair-weather days, a toilet and urinal, and at the stern a seating area for 9 people. The mood lighting can be set to any colour — warm white for a dinner, deeper and more colourful for a party. The boat adapts to the evening. The vibe The Halve Maen seats up to 66 people for drinks receptions or festive cruises, with guests moving freely between the seating area, high tables and bar. For a seated dinner with chef, the capacity is up to 30 people. Thanks to the 50-inch screen on board, the Halve Maen also works as a meeting room on the water, for groups of up to 30. The boat is also an official wedding venue recognised by the City of Amsterdam, with space for both the ceremony and the celebration on board. For entertainment, we can arrange a DJ, singers or live musicians.
